hive
A home where many bees live and work together.
A hive is a home where bees live together as a colony. Wild bees might build their hive in a hollow tree, while beekeepers provide wooden boxes designed specifically for bees to build their honeycombs inside. A single hive can house tens of thousands of bees, all working together with remarkable organization. Each bee has a job: some gather nectar, some guard the entrance, some care for baby bees, and the queen lays eggs.
When people talk about a hive of activity, they mean a place buzzing with busy, purposeful work, like a classroom during a group project or a kitchen during holiday cooking. The comparison works because beehives are amazingly productive: bees communicate through special dances, coordinate their efforts without a boss giving orders, and accomplish huge tasks through teamwork.
The term hive mind describes how a group can seem to think or act as one, sharing ideas and goals so completely that individual thoughts blend together. Scientists study beehives to understand cooperation and communication, since these tiny insects have been working together successfully for millions of years.
