hoagie
A long sandwich on a roll filled with meats and toppings.
A hoagie is a long sandwich made on a roll of Italian bread, filled with meats, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and other toppings. In Philadelphia and the surrounding area, people call these sandwiches hoagies, but they go by different names in other parts of the country: subs in most places, heroes in New York City, grinders in New England, and po' boys in New Orleans.
The sandwich gets its name from the long, oval-shaped bread roll it's served on. A typical hoagie might be stuffed with sliced ham, salami, and provolone cheese, then topped with shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, onions, oil, and vinegar. Some hoagies are served hot, with the cheese melted, while others are cold.
Whether you call it a hoagie, sub, or hero, you're talking about the same delicious kind of sandwich.
