hodgepodge
A messy mix of different things that don’t match well.
A hodgepodge is a jumbled mixture of different things that don't really match or go together in an organized way. Picture opening your junk drawer at home: rubber bands, old batteries, twist ties, a few pennies, takeout menus, and mystery keys all mixed together. That's a hodgepodge.
You might write a story that's a hodgepodge of ideas, jumping from pirates to robots to talking animals without any clear connection. A room decorated with a hodgepodge of furniture styles might have a sleek modern desk next to a lumpy old armchair and a beanbag chair. Your school outfit could be a hodgepodge if you wore striped socks, plaid shorts, and a polka-dot shirt all at once.
The word suggests randomness and lack of planning. A well-organized collection isn't a hodgepodge, but the miscellaneous stuff that accumulates in your backpack over a school year definitely is. Some hodgepodges happen by accident, like when different people contribute items to a yard sale. Others happen because someone just grabbed whatever was available without worrying whether it all went together.
