homeroom
A classroom where students meet each morning for attendance.
A homeroom is a classroom where students gather at the start of each school day for attendance, announcements, and administrative tasks. Your homeroom teacher takes attendance, shares important information about school events or schedule changes, and helps you get organized for the day ahead. Think of it as your home base in the school building.
In some schools, homeroom lasts just 10 or 15 minutes before students head to their first class. In others, it's a longer period where you might also read, work on homework, or participate in advisory activities. Your homeroom is often where you'll find your assigned locker, mailbox, or cubby.
Even though you might have different teachers for math, science, and English, your homeroom teacher is often the adult at school who knows you best. They track your overall progress, sign permission slips, and sometimes serve as your first point of contact when parents need to communicate with the school. When someone asks, “What's your homeroom?” they're usually asking which teacher's room you report to each morning.
