homing pigeon
A trained pigeon that can find its way home from far away.
A homing pigeon is a type of domestic pigeon bred and trained to find its way home from distant locations. These remarkable birds can be released hundreds of miles from their home loft and will fly back, navigating with extraordinary accuracy using the Earth's magnetic field, the position of the sun, landmarks, and possibly even their sense of smell.
For thousands of years, people used homing pigeons to carry messages. In ancient Rome, they delivered news of chariot race results. During World War I and World War II, soldiers released pigeons carrying tiny capsules with urgent messages strapped to their legs, since radios could be intercepted or fail. One famous homing pigeon named Cher Ami saved nearly 200 American soldiers by delivering a message despite being badly injured.
Before telephones and the internet, homing pigeons were one of the fastest ways to communicate across long distances. Today, people still raise and race homing pigeons as a hobby, timing how quickly the birds return from release points far away. Scientists continue studying these birds to understand their navigation abilities, which are still not fully explained despite centuries of observation.
This homing instinct is so strong that pigeons have found their way back across oceans and mountain ranges.
