hoodie
A warm sweatshirt or jacket with a hood and pocket.
A hoodie is a sweatshirt or jacket with a hood attached to the back of the neck. The hood can be pulled up over your head to keep warm, block out distractions, or shield you from light rain. Most hoodies also have a large front pocket called a kangaroo pocket where you can warm your hands or stash small items.
Hoodies became popular in the 1930s when a clothing company designed them for workers in cold New York warehouses. Athletes soon discovered they were perfect for staying warm before and after practice. By the 1970s and 80s, hoodies had become everyday casual wear for people of all ages.
Today, hoodies are everywhere: kids wear them to school, athletes wear them for warmth, and people wear them for comfort while relaxing at home. They come in pullover styles (where you pull them on over your head) or zip-up versions with a front zipper. College students often wear hoodies displaying their school name, showing pride in where they study.
