hope
To believe something good might happen in the future.
Hope is believing that something good can happen, even when you're not sure it will. When you hope for something, you want it and think it might be possible, but you don't know for certain. You might hope for snow on your birthday, hope your team wins the championship, or hope a sick friend gets better soon.
Hope has energy that keeps you moving forward. When you have hope, you keep trying instead of giving up. A scientist working on a difficult problem has hope that a solution exists. A gardener planting seeds in spring has hope they'll grow into vegetables by summer. Hope keeps you moving forward when things are hard.
The opposite of hope is despair, which means feeling like nothing good will happen. Hope is what helps people get through tough times: knowing that even though today is difficult, tomorrow might be better. It's what makes you study for a test you find challenging, practice a skill that doesn't come naturally, or keep working on a friendship after an argument.
You can also use hope as a verb: “I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow” or “She hoped to finish her book before bedtime.” Hope is one of the most powerful feelings humans have because it gives us reasons to keep going.
