hopelessness
A heavy feeling that nothing will ever get better.
Hopelessness is the feeling that nothing will get better, that no solution exists, and that trying won't make any difference. It's one of the heaviest feelings a person can experience because it drains away motivation and energy.
When someone feels hopeless about a difficult math class, they might think, “I'll never understand this, so why bother studying?” When a sports team falls far behind, players might feel hopeless about winning and stop giving their full effort. Hopelessness makes people want to give up.
This feeling differs from ordinary disappointment or frustration. You can feel frustrated with a tough puzzle but still believe you'll solve it eventually. Hopelessness means you've stopped believing in any possibility of success or improvement.
What makes hopelessness particularly difficult is that it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. When people feel hopeless, they often stop trying, which makes their situation worse, which makes them feel even more hopeless. Breaking free from hopelessness usually requires help from others, small victories that prove change is possible, or the passage of time that brings new perspective.
