Horrid means causing horror, disgust, or shock. Something horrid makes you recoil or feel genuinely disturbed. It goes beyond mere unpleasantness to produce a strong negative reaction. A rotting smell might be merely bad, but a truly horrid smell makes you cover your nose and want to leave the room immediately.

The word often describes things that assault your senses or sensibilities. Spoiled food can have a horrid taste. A room left messy for months might become horrid with grime and clutter. Bad behavior can be horrid when it crosses from merely annoying into cruel or shocking.

People sometimes use horrid more casually to mean “very bad” or “terrible,” like saying “I had a horrid day at school.” But the word carries more punch than just “bad”: it suggests something genuinely awful that affects you strongly. When Charles Dickens described a villain as having a “horrid grin,” he wasn't saying the smile was simply ugly. He meant it revealed something disturbing about the character's nature.

While you might not like broccoli, you probably wouldn't call it horrid unless it was moldy, foul-smelling, and made you feel sick just to look at.
