horse
A large, strong animal that people ride or use for work.
A horse is a large, powerful animal that has lived alongside humans for thousands of years. Horses have long faces, flowing manes, strong legs, and hooves instead of paws or feet. They can run incredibly fast (some reach speeds of 55 miles per hour) and possess remarkable strength, which is why people measure engine power in units called horsepower.
For most of human history, horses were essential for transportation, farming, and communication. Before cars and tractors existed, horses pulled plows through fields, carried riders across continents, and hauled wagons full of goods. The Pony Express used horses to deliver mail across the American West. Armies rode horses into battle. A family's horses were often their most valuable possessions.
Today, people still ride horses for sport, work, and pleasure. Some compete in equestrian events like show jumping or dressage. Ranchers use horses to herd cattle across vast stretches of land. Many people simply enjoy the connection they feel with these intelligent, sensitive animals.
When someone works extremely hard, we might say they works like a horse. If you hear something directly from the original source, that's getting it straight from the horse's mouth. And if you're doing something in the wrong order, someone might tell you that you're putting the cart before the horse.
