householder
The main adult responsible for running and managing a home.
A householder is the person who runs a household. The householder is typically the main adult responsible for a home: paying bills, making sure there's food in the pantry, deciding when repairs need to happen, and generally keeping things running smoothly. In a family with two parents, they might share householder responsibilities, splitting tasks like grocery shopping, cooking, and managing the family budget.
The term shows up often in official contexts. When the census comes around, forms ask for the name of the householder: the person who owns or rents the home and is responsible for it. Tax documents and legal papers use the word the same way.
In earlier times, householder carried weight in communities. Being a householder meant you had established yourself with property and responsibilities, which often came with respect and sometimes even voting rights in local matters. Today, the word simply describes anyone managing a home, whether that's a single parent in an apartment, grandparents in the house where they raised their children, or young adults in their first rental. The householder is the person who makes sure the lights stay on and everyone has what they need.
