housetop
The roof on top of a house.
A housetop is simply the roof of a house, the structure that covers the top and protects everything inside from rain, snow, and sun. In ancient times, many houses in places like Jerusalem and other Middle Eastern cities had flat rooftops where families would go to cool off in the evening breeze, hang laundry to dry, or even sleep on hot summer nights. These rooftops were like an extra outdoor room.
You might hear the phrase “shout it from the housetops,” which means to announce something so loudly and publicly that everyone will hear it. This expression comes from those ancient flat roofs, where standing up high meant your voice could carry across the neighborhood. If you wanted everyone to know your good news, climbing to the housetop and shouting was one way to spread the word.
Today, most houses have slanted roofs instead of flat ones, but we still use the word housetop, especially in that expression about sharing news far and wide.
