huckster
A pushy, often dishonest person who tries hard to sell things.
A huckster is someone who sells things in an aggressive, pushy way, often using exaggerated claims or shady tactics to make a sale. Think of a street vendor shouting, “Best deal in town! You won't find it cheaper anywhere!” while waving products in your face. A huckster cares more about making the sale than about whether the customer really needs what they're buying or whether their claims are completely true.
The word often suggests someone not quite trustworthy. A huckster might sell “miracle cures” that don't actually work, or convince you to buy something you don't need by making it sound amazing. In old Western towns, traveling hucksters would roll into town with a wagon full of goods, make grand promises about their products, sell as much as they could, then leave before anyone discovered the “magic tonic” was just sugar water.
Today, the word describes anyone who uses high-pressure sales tactics or misleading advertising. A late-night TV host selling kitchen gadgets with wild claims might be called a huckster. The word carries a hint of disapproval: it suggests someone willing to bend the truth to make a profit.
