A hybrid is something created by combining two different elements or types. In biology, a hybrid animal or plant results from breeding two different species or varieties. A mule is a hybrid: the offspring of a horse and a donkey. When farmers cross two varieties of tomato, they create a hybrid that might grow better or taste sweeter than either parent plant.

The word has expanded far beyond biology. A hybrid car uses both gasoline and electricity to power its engine, combining the advantages of both. A hybrid classroom might mix in-person learning with online lessons. A hybrid sport like chess boxing alternates rounds of chess with rounds of boxing (yes, that's real!). Some musicians create hybrid styles by blending jazz with rock, or classical with hip-hop.

The key idea is combination: taking qualities from two sources to create something new that works differently than either part alone. When your teacher describes an assignment as a hybrid of an essay and a presentation, she means it combines elements of both. The resulting hybrid can gain advantages from both parents while creating something distinctly its own.
