ikigai
A special purpose that makes your life feel meaningful and worthwhile.
Ikigai is a Japanese concept meaning “a reason for being” or the thing that makes life feel worthwhile and gives you a sense of purpose. The word combines iki (life) and gai (value or worth).
Your ikigai might be something you love doing that also helps others. For a doctor, it could be healing patients. For a teacher, it could be watching students learn and grow. For a young person, it might be mastering an instrument, solving math problems, building things, or helping their community in some meaningful way.
The concept suggests that real fulfillment comes from finding something that sits at the intersection of what you're good at, what you enjoy, what the world needs, and what creates value. A student might discover their ikigai when they realize they love writing stories that make people laugh, or when they find they're skilled at explaining difficult concepts to classmates who are struggling.
Japanese culture considers ikigai important throughout life. Some researchers believe that having a strong sense of ikigai contributes to the remarkable longevity of people in certain regions of Japan. The concept reminds us that purpose isn't just about achievement or success, but about finding meaning in what we do each day, whether it's grand or simple.
