illuminate
To light something up and make it bright.
To illuminate means to light something up or make it bright. When you flip a light switch, you illuminate a dark room. When the sun rises, it illuminates the world. A flashlight illuminates the path ahead when you're walking at night.
The word also means to make something clearer or easier to understand, like shining a light on an idea. A great teacher illuminates difficult concepts, helping students suddenly see what they mean. When a scientist's research illuminates how plants grow, she's revealing something that was previously mysterious or confusing.
Historical manuscripts were sometimes decorated with gold leaf and bright colors in their margins and opening letters. This art is called illumination, and these decorated books are called illuminated manuscripts. The gold and colors literally made the pages shine, but they also helped illuminate important passages by drawing the reader's eye to them.
Notice how both meanings share the same core idea: making something visible or clear, whether that's physical light or mental understanding. When something illuminating happens in a conversation, it's like a light bulb turning on in your mind.
