immerse
To deeply involve yourself in something so it fills you.
To immerse yourself in something means to involve yourself in it completely, so deeply that it surrounds you and fills your attention. When you immerse yourself in a good book, you become so absorbed in the story that you barely notice what's happening around you. When someone learning Spanish immerses themselves in the language, they might watch Spanish movies, listen to Spanish music, and try to think in Spanish throughout the day.
Imagine diving into a pool and being surrounded by water on all sides. When you immerse yourself in a project, hobby, or subject, you're diving into it just as completely.
You can also immerse actual objects in liquid. A chef might immerse vegetables in ice water to stop them from cooking further, or a scientist might immerse a thermometer in boiling water to measure its temperature.
The word suggests total engagement rather than casual involvement. Reading one article about ancient Egypt isn't immersion, but spending your whole Saturday building a model pyramid, watching documentaries, and imagining life along the Nile is immersion.
