import
To bring goods or products into a country for sale.
The word import has two main meanings:
- To bring goods or products into a country from somewhere else. When the United States imports bananas from Central America or electronics from Japan, those products cross borders to reach American stores. Countries import things they can't easily produce themselves or that cost less to buy from other nations. The opposite is export, which means sending goods out to other countries. An import (as a noun) is the actual product being brought in: “Coffee is a major import for many countries.”
- To transfer data or information from one computer program or system to another. When you import photos from your camera to your computer, you're moving those files into a new location. A teacher might import a spreadsheet of grades into their gradebook software. This meaning developed as computers became common, borrowing from the idea of bringing something from outside into a new place.
