An improviser is someone who makes things up on the spot, creating without a script or plan. Jazz musicians are improvisers when they invent melodies during a performance, responding to what other band members play. Actors become improvisers when they create dialogue and scenes without rehearsing, building a story moment by moment based on suggestions from the audience.

The skill goes beyond performance. When a teacher's lesson plan falls apart because the projector breaks, she might improvise a new activity using only a whiteboard and markers. When a basketball player finds their usual play blocked, they improvise a different path to the basket. An improviser in any field knows how to think quickly, adapt to unexpected situations, and create solutions with whatever's available.

Good improvisers practice their craft seriously. They study fundamentals, learn techniques, and develop quick thinking so they can respond creatively under pressure. A comedic improviser might spend years learning how to build jokes spontaneously. A musical improviser practices scales and chord progressions until they can combine them in fresh ways without thinking.

Being an improviser means trusting yourself to figure things out as you go, staying flexible when plans change, and finding opportunities in unexpected moments.
