inaction
The state of not doing anything when you should act.
Inaction is the state of not taking action when action is needed or expected. It's what happens when someone knows they should do something but doesn't do it.
Imagine watching a classmate being teased but saying nothing, or seeing litter on the playground but walking past it. That's inaction: recognizing a situation but choosing not to act. Sometimes inaction comes from fear, uncertainty, or simply not caring enough. Other times people freeze up, unsure what to do.
Inaction has consequences just like action does. When a student practices piano every day, they improve. When they don't practice at all, that inaction means they don't get better. A leaky faucet ignored doesn't fix itself. Inaction lets the problem grow worse.
The opposite of inaction isn't always dramatic heroism. Sometimes it's just doing your homework instead of procrastinating, speaking up when something's wrong, or helping when you see someone needs it.
