incentive
Something that encourages you to do something by offering reward.
An incentive is something that motivates you to take action or try harder. Think of it as a reward or benefit that makes you want to do something you might not otherwise do.
Parents might offer an incentive for good grades, like a special trip or extra screen time. A teacher might create an incentive system where students earn points for helping classmates, with prizes for those who earn the most. Companies use incentives too: a store might offer employees a bonus for excellent customer service, or give shoppers a discount coupon to encourage them to return.
The key thing about incentives is that they change behavior by making something more appealing. A pizza party becomes an incentive to finish a group project on time. The promise of choosing the next family movie night movie becomes an incentive to complete your chores without complaining.
Incentives work because they align what you want with what someone else wants. Your parents want you to practice piano regularly; you want to go to the amusement park. When they connect the two, the amusement park becomes an incentive for consistent practice. Understanding incentives helps you recognize why people (including yourself) make certain choices and how rewards shape the decisions we make every day.
