included
To be part of a group, list, or whole thing.
Included means to be part of a group or list, or to be contained within something larger. When the price of a museum ticket includes admission to the special exhibit, you don't have to pay extra to see it. When your teacher says everyone is included in the field trip, that means no one gets left behind.
The word carries a feeling of belonging. Being included in a game at recess means the other kids want you there. When a recipe says “toppings not included,” you'll need to supply those yourself. Scientists talk about what's included in their research studies. A birthday party invitation might note that cake and drinks are included.
The opposite of included is excluded, which means left out. Notice how different these feel: being included makes people feel welcomed and valued, while being excluded can feel lonely or unfair. When you include others in your activities, you're making space for them and showing they matter.
Sometimes people form an inclusive community, which means they actively work to include everyone regardless of their differences. An inclusive classroom might have students of different abilities all learning together, with the teacher making sure everyone can participate in their own way.
