incongruent
Not matching or fitting together; seeming wrong or out-of-place.
Incongruent means not matching, not fitting together properly, or inconsistent with what you'd expect. When things are incongruent, they clash or seem out of place with each other.
If someone shows up to a formal wedding wearing shorts and a t-shirt, their outfit is incongruent with the occasion. When a friend tells you they're fine but their face shows they're clearly upset, their words are incongruent with their expression. In math class, if two triangles have different shapes and sizes, they're incongruent because they don't match.
The word often highlights something that feels wrong or odd because pieces don't harmonize. A serious documentary using silly cartoon music would feel incongruent. A student who claims to love reading but never finishes a book shows incongruent behavior.
The opposite is congruent, meaning things match or fit together properly. Congruent triangles in geometry are identical in shape and size. When someone's actions are congruent with their values, they practice what they preach.
You can spot incongruence when something makes you think, “that doesn't fit” or “something's off here.” Your brain naturally notices when pieces don't match up the way they should.
