incongruous
Strangely out of place or not matching its surroundings.
Incongruous means oddly out of place or not fitting with everything around it. When something is incongruous, it clashes with its surroundings in a way that makes you do a double take.
Picture a student showing up to a beach party wearing a full snowsuit and ski goggles. That outfit would be incongruous because it doesn't match the situation at all. Or imagine opening a serious history textbook and finding a page filled with silly cartoon doodles. Those drawings would be incongruous with the formal, academic tone of the rest of the book.
The word often describes situations where one thing stands out because it doesn't belong. A fancy chandelier hanging in a rustic barn might look incongruous. A kindergartener discussing quantum physics would seem incongruous because that level of knowledge doesn't fit our expectations for someone so young.
Something incongruous is jarring and noticeably out of harmony with what surrounds it. The contrast is what makes it stand out. You might describe a situation as having an incongruity (the noun form) when pointing out this mismatch. Writers and comedians often use incongruous elements deliberately to create humor or surprise, putting things together that absolutely don't belong side by side.
