inept
Lacking skill and doing things in a clumsy way.
Inept means lacking skill or ability at something, often in a way that's noticeable or even comical. An inept juggler drops the balls constantly. An inept cook burns the toast, oversalts the soup, and somehow sets off the smoke alarm while making a sandwich.
The word carries a sense of clumsiness or awkwardness that goes beyond being a beginner. Everyone starts out not knowing how to ride a bike, but an inept cyclist might wobble into bushes, mix up the pedals, and somehow end up going backwards. A novice is simply inexperienced, while someone inept struggles more than expected, lacking the coordination or judgment that would help them improve.
You might hear someone described as socially inept if they consistently say the wrong thing at the wrong time, missing obvious social cues that others pick up naturally. A politician called inept isn't making one mistake but showing a pattern of poor decisions and bad judgment.
The word isn't usually used for serious failures with major consequences. It suggests bumbling incompetence more than dangerous negligence.
