inflorescence
A group or arrangement of flowers growing together on a plant.
An inflorescence is the arrangement of flowers on a plant, or the cluster of flowers itself. While a single rose growing on a stem is just one flower, a lilac bush displays hundreds of tiny flowers grouped together in cone-shaped clusters. Each of those purple clusters is an inflorescence.
Different plants organize their flowers in distinctive patterns. Sunflowers pack hundreds of tiny flowers into one large disk that looks like a single bloom. Wheat and oats arrange their flowers in loose, dangling clusters. Cherry trees produce flowers in rounded bunches along their branches.
Scientists use inflorescence patterns to identify and classify plants, since closely related species often share similar flower arrangements. A botanist examining an unknown plant might study its inflorescence to determine what family it belongs to. Gardeners care about inflorescence too: some flower arrangements are showier and attract more pollinators, while others produce more seeds or fruit.
When spring arrives and a fruit tree's inflorescence bursts open, those coordinated clusters of flowers create the stunning displays that make orchards and gardens so beautiful.
