influence
The power to change what someone thinks or does.
Influence is the power to affect how someone thinks, feels, or acts without forcing them directly. When you have influence over someone, your words, actions, or presence can shape their decisions and behavior. A teacher might influence students to love reading by sharing exciting books. An older sibling might influence a younger one to try a new sport.
Influence works quietly, often without commands or orders. Think about how a friend's enthusiasm for drawing might influence you to start sketching yourself. Or how watching a documentary about ocean life could influence your interest in marine biology. Unlike forcing someone to do something, influence creates change through example, persuasion, or inspiration.
The word can also describe the ability itself: “She has great influence in our school,” meaning people listen to her and value her opinions. Historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Susan B. Anthony used their influence to change entire societies.
Parents, teachers, friends, books, and experiences all influence who we become. Being aware of these influences helps you think critically about your choices and the impact you have on others.
