infrequently
Not happening very often; only once in a while.
Infrequently means not happening very often, or only once in a while. If you visit your grandmother infrequently, you might see her only a few times a year instead of every week. If a student raises their hand infrequently in class, they speak up now and then but not regularly.
The word sits between “rarely” and “occasionally.” Something that happens infrequently occurs more often than something rare but less often than something frequent. A comet that appears infrequently might show up every seventy-five years. A restaurant you visit infrequently might be a place you go to once or twice a year for special occasions.
You can use infrequently to describe patterns in nature, habits, or events. Earthquakes happen infrequently in most places. Some people exercise infrequently, while others make it a daily habit. The key is that there's no regular schedule: infrequent events are spread out, unpredictable, or separated by long gaps of time.
