inhumanely
In a very cruel way that ignores others’ pain and suffering.
Inhumanely means treating a person or animal with terrible cruelty, without any care for their pain or suffering. When someone acts inhumanely, they ignore basic kindness and compassion.
Humane describes treating others with mercy, respect, and gentleness. So when someone acts inhumanely, they're doing the opposite: causing unnecessary suffering or pain.
You might read about animals being kept inhumanely in cramped, filthy cages with no food or water. Throughout history, people have been treated inhumanely during wars or under cruel governments. Even in everyday situations, forcing someone to work in dangerous conditions without rest could be called treating them inhumanely.
The word carries serious weight. It's not used for small meannesses like leaving someone out of a game. It describes treatment so harsh and uncaring that it shocks our sense of right and wrong. When we say someone was treated inhumanely, we mean their basic needs and dignity were ignored, as if they didn't matter at all.
