inscription
Words carved or written on something to last a long time.
An inscription is writing carved, engraved, or permanently marked onto a hard surface like stone, metal, or wood. When ancient Romans carved laws into marble tablets, they created inscriptions that lasted thousands of years. When you see words chiseled into a monument or stamped onto a coin, you're looking at an inscription.
Throughout history, people have used inscriptions to preserve important messages, from Egyptian hieroglyphs carved into temple walls to the words etched on the Liberty Bell. Libraries and museums contain inscriptions that help us understand how people lived centuries ago, because unlike paper or parchment, inscriptions on durable materials can survive fires, floods, and time itself.
The word can also mean a short, meaningful message written inside a book as a gift. When someone writes “To Sarah, with love from Grandma, Christmas 2024” on the inside cover of a book, that personal message is an inscription. These inscriptions turn ordinary books into keepsakes, preserving not just the author's words but also the memory of who gave the book and why it mattered.
