intercede
To step in to help solve a problem or argument.
To intercede means to step in and try to help when there's a conflict or problem between other people. When you intercede, you're acting as a bridge or peacemaker, trying to make things better for someone who needs help.
Imagine two of your friends are arguing, and neither will apologize. You might intercede by talking to each one separately, explaining the other's point of view, and helping them find a way to make up. Or suppose your little brother is about to get in trouble for something that wasn't entirely his fault. You might intercede with your parents, explaining what really happened so they understand the full story.
When you intercede, you're actively working to change an outcome, often by speaking up for someone who can't speak for themselves or by mediating between two sides. A teacher might intercede when she sees a student being treated unfairly by classmates. A diplomat might intercede between countries to prevent conflict.
Intercession is the noun form. Someone who intercedes regularly might be called an intercessor, though that's less common in everyday conversation.
