interpretive
Explaining or showing the meaning of something, often creatively.
Interpretive means explaining or showing what something means, especially when there's room for different understandings. An interpretive dance uses movement to express the feeling or story behind the music. When you visit a national park, an interpretive center helps you understand what you're seeing by explaining the geology, wildlife, and history.
The word appears often when someone is making sense of something for others. An interpretive museum display explains the significance and context of artifacts. When a musician gives an interpretive performance of a classical piece, they add their own understanding of what the composer meant through the notes they play.
Notice that interpretive work requires both knowledge and creativity. A park ranger giving an interpretive talk about volcanoes knows the science but also figures out how to make it interesting and meaningful. Your English teacher might ask for an interpretive essay where you explain what you think a poem means and support your ideas with evidence. The word suggests that understanding requires more than just facts: it needs someone to bridge the gap between information and meaning.
