intersection
A place where two or more paths or roads cross.
An intersection is the place where two or more things cross or meet. When two roads cross each other, they form an intersection where cars must stop, look for traffic, and decide when it's safe to proceed. In most cities, intersections have traffic lights or stop signs to help everyone move through safely.
In mathematics, intersection means something similar but more abstract. The intersection of two sets contains only the items that appear in both sets. If one circle contains all students who play soccer and another contains all students who play piano, the intersection shows students who do both. Mathematicians use a special symbol (∩) to show intersection: if A ∩ B contains the number 5, that means 5 appears in both set A and set B.
The word also describes where different ideas or fields of knowledge meet and overlap. Someone might study biology and computer science and work at the intersection of these fields, perhaps using computers to understand how cells work. When different subjects intersect, they can create opportunities for new discoveries and innovations.
