inverted
Turned upside down or reversed from its usual position.
Inverted means turned upside down or reversed from the normal position. When you do an inverted somersault, you flip so your feet go over your head. When you hang from monkey bars with your head pointing toward the ground, you're in an inverted position.
The word can describe something flipped or turned around. An inverted image is one that's been flipped: what was on top is now on the bottom. Some roller coasters have inverted sections where riders hang beneath the track rather than sitting on top of it.
You can invert many things beyond physical objects. In music, an inverted chord rearranges the notes so a different note becomes the lowest one. A pyramid has a wide base and narrow top, but an inverted pyramid is wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, like a triangle balanced on its tip.
The word suggests a deliberate reversal or flip, not just something being different. When something is inverted, it's recognizably the opposite of what it normally is.
