involve
To include someone or something as an important part of something.
To involve means to include someone or something as a necessary part of a situation or activity. When a science project involves building a model volcano, that means constructing the volcano is a required part of the work. When someone says “This doesn't involve you,” they mean you're not part of it and shouldn't interfere.
The word often suggests that whatever is involved plays an important role. A mystery that involves hidden clues means those clues are central to solving it. A recipe that involves three different steps requires you to complete all three. When teachers say a field trip will involve walking several miles, they're letting you know to wear comfortable shoes because the walking isn't optional.
You can also involve other people by bringing them into an activity or decision. If you're planning a surprise party, you might involve your siblings by asking them to help decorate. When parents get involved in their child's school, they participate actively rather than staying on the sidelines.
Sometimes involve suggests complexity or difficulty. When someone sighs and says a repair job involves taking apart the entire engine, they mean it's complicated work. The more something involves, the more parts and steps it includes, and usually the more attention it requires.
