issue
A problem or concern that needs attention.
The word issue has several meanings:
- A problem or concern that needs attention. When your teacher asks if anyone has issues understanding the homework, she wants to know if something is confusing. A school might face issues with overcrowded classrooms or a broken heating system. Politicians debate national issues like education funding or healthcare. Some issues are minor (a small disagreement between friends), while others are serious (a country facing an economic crisis).
- A single edition of a magazine or newspaper. Comic book fans eagerly await each new issue of their favorite series. Libraries keep back issues of magazines on their shelves, meaning older editions you can still read.
- (verb) To officially give out or distribute something. A library issues books to borrowers. A school issues report cards at the end of each term. A government issues passports to citizens. When something is issued, it comes from an official source with authority.
