it
A pronoun used for a thing, animal, time, or situation.
The word it is one of the smallest but most useful words in English. It's a pronoun we use to refer to a thing, animal, or situation we've already mentioned or that's clear from context.
When you say “I found a quarter on the sidewalk and put it in my pocket,” the word it refers back to the quarter. When you're playing tag and someone yells “You're it!”, they mean you're now the person who has to chase everyone else.
We use it for objects: “That book looks interesting. Have you read it?” We use it for animals when we don't know their gender: “The squirrel grabbed the acorn and buried it.” We use it for weather and time: “It's raining” or “It's three o'clock.”
Sometimes it refers to a whole situation rather than a specific thing. If your science project wins first place, you might say “It feels amazing!” Here, it means the entire experience of winning.
The word it helps us avoid repetition. Instead of saying “I saw a meteor and the meteor was bright and the meteor moved fast,” we say “I saw a meteor and it was bright and it moved fast.” This small word makes our language flow more smoothly and naturally.
