job
Work you do regularly to earn money.
A job is work that someone does regularly to earn money. When your parent goes to their job each morning, they might teach students, fix cars, design buildings, or do any of thousands of other tasks that people need done. In return for their time, effort, and skill, they receive a paycheck.
Jobs are how most people support themselves and their families. A first job, like babysitting or mowing lawns, teaches responsibility and the satisfaction of earning your own money. As people grow older, they often train for specific jobs: a nurse learns medicine, a carpenter learns woodworking, an accountant learns finance.
The word can also mean a task or piece of work, even if no money is involved. If your teacher assigns everyone the job of cleaning their desk area, that's a responsibility you need to complete. When someone says “good job!” after you finish a difficult assignment, they're praising the work you did. A job well done means you completed something with care and effort.
Finding the right job often means matching what you're good at with what the world needs. Some people love their jobs because the work feels meaningful or interesting. Others view their job mainly as a way to earn money for the things they care about outside of work.
