jumpsuit
A one-piece outfit that has a top and pants together.
A jumpsuit is a one-piece garment that combines a shirt or top with pants, all connected together. When you put on a jumpsuit, you're getting dressed in a single step instead of choosing separate clothes for your upper and lower body.
Jumpsuits were originally designed for parachutists (hence the name) and pilots who needed practical, secure clothing that wouldn't come untucked or get caught on equipment. Mechanics and factory workers began wearing them because they could move freely without worrying about their shirts riding up. Today, jumpsuits come in many styles: kids might wear cozy fleece jumpsuits as pajamas, astronauts wear high-tech jumpsuits in space, and fashion designers create elegant jumpsuits for formal occasions.
While putting on a jumpsuit might feel convenient, there's one notable drawback: if you need to use the bathroom, you may have to take off most of the outfit. Some jumpsuits have zippers or snaps to make this easier, but it's still trickier than wearing separate pieces.
