jungle gym
A playground structure made of bars for climbing and hanging.
A jungle gym is a sturdy metal climbing structure found on playgrounds, made of interconnected bars, poles, and platforms that kids can climb on, hang from, and navigate through. The classic jungle gym looks like a geometric dome or cube of metal pipes, creating a three-dimensional maze where you can climb up, across, and around in countless different ways.
Despite its name, a jungle gym has nothing to do with actual jungles. It got this name because climbing through its framework of bars feels a bit like swinging through trees like a monkey. The structure challenges your strength, coordination, and creativity as you figure out different routes to reach the top or move from one side to the other.
Jungle gyms became popular on American playgrounds in the early 1900s and remain common today, though modern versions often include plastic components and come in many creative shapes beyond the traditional dome. They teach kids to assess risks, build physical confidence, and solve spatial problems: Which bar should I grab next? Can I reach that platform from here?
The term jungle gym is sometimes used figuratively to describe any complex system you have to navigate carefully, like when someone says that understanding a new video game's controls feels like “climbing through a jungle gym.”
