kernel
The soft, edible inside part of a nut or seed.
Kernel has several related meanings that all share the idea of something essential at the center:
- The soft, edible part inside a nut's hard shell or inside a seed. When you crack open a walnut, the kernel is the wrinkly part you eat. Popcorn kernels are corn seeds that explode into fluffy snacks when heated. Each kernel contains moisture that turns to steam and bursts the seed open.
- The central, most important part of something. When your teacher asks for “just the kernel of the idea,” she wants the core point without extra details. A kernel of truth means a small but important bit of truth hidden in a larger story. If your friend's wild excuse has a kernel of truth, some tiny part of it is actually real, even if the rest is exaggerated.
- In computers, the kernel is the central program that controls everything else in the operating system. It manages memory, runs programs, and handles communication between the computer's hardware and software. Just as a seed's kernel is essential for growing a new plant, a computer's kernel is essential for making everything else work.
