kickball
A playground game where you kick a ball and run bases.
Kickball is a playground game that combines elements of baseball and soccer. Instead of hitting a pitched ball with a bat, players kick a large rubber ball (usually red and about the size of a basketball) that's rolled toward them along the ground. After kicking, you run around bases just like in baseball, trying to reach home plate before the other team gets you out.
The game became popular in American schools in the early 1900s and remains a recess favorite today. It requires no expensive equipment and works well for large groups with mixed athletic abilities. Anyone can kick a ball rolling along the ground, which makes kickball more accessible than baseball for younger players still developing their hand-eye coordination.
Teams typically play on a baseball diamond or any open space with bases marked out. The fielding team can get kickers out by catching the kicked ball in the air, throwing it to a base before the runner arrives, or tagging a runner with the ball. Strategy matters: a strong kicker might boot the ball deep into the outfield, while a smart runner watches for chances to advance when fielders aren't paying attention.
