kitchen
A room where food is prepared and cooked.
A kitchen is the room in a house, restaurant, or other building where food is prepared and cooked. It's where raw ingredients like vegetables, meat, and flour get transformed into meals through cutting, mixing, heating, and baking.
Most kitchens contain similar tools and appliances: a stove or cooktop for heating pans, an oven for baking, a refrigerator to keep food cold and fresh, a sink for washing dishes and ingredients, and counters for workspace. You'll also find cabinets storing plates, bowls, pots, and utensils like spatulas and wooden spoons.
Kitchens serve as cooking spaces and as gathering places. In many homes, the kitchen becomes the place where families talk while preparing dinner together, where friends lean against the counter during parties, or where kids do homework at the table while a parent cooks nearby. The phrase “the heart of the home” often refers to the kitchen because it's where people naturally come together.
The word can also describe the staff who work in a restaurant's cooking area. When a server takes your order to the kitchen, they mean the team of cooks and chefs preparing food. A restaurant might advertise that its kitchen uses fresh, local ingredients, or that its kitchen stays open until midnight.
