labradoodle
A friendly pet dog that is part Labrador and part poodle.
A labradoodle is a dog bred by crossing a Labrador retriever with a poodle.
The labradoodle was first deliberately bred in Australia in the 1980s by a breeder who wanted to create a guide dog for a person with vision loss who was also allergic to most dogs. Poodles have a special kind of curly coat that sheds very little, making them better for some people with allergies, while Labradors are known for being friendly, smart, and easy to train. The breeder hoped to create a dog that combined the best traits of both breeds.
Labradoodles vary widely in size, coat type, and temperament because they're a mix rather than an established breed with consistent characteristics. Some look more like Labs, others more like poodles. Their coats can be wavy, curly, or somewhere in between. They're typically energetic, affectionate dogs that need plenty of exercise and attention.
The labradoodle's popularity sparked interest in other “designer dogs” like goldendoodles (golden retriever plus poodle) and cockapoos (cocker spaniel plus poodle). While some labradoodles work as service dogs, most are simply family pets whose owners appreciate their friendly personalities and often minimal shedding.
