lame
Not cool, fun, or good enough; boring or weak.
The word lame has two main meanings:
- When describing a person or animal, lame means unable to walk properly because of an injury or problem with a leg or foot. A lame horse might favor one leg because of a stone in its hoof or a strained muscle. Before modern medicine, people who were lame often walked with a cane or crutch. In classic books like A Christmas Carol, Tiny Tim is described as lame.
- In casual speech, lame means disappointing, unconvincing, or not good enough. If someone offers a lame excuse for missing practice, their explanation sounds weak and unbelievable. A joke might fall flat and seem lame, or a party could turn out to be lame if nothing fun happens. When used this way, the word suggests something failed to meet expectations or lacks energy and excitement.
The physical meaning is straightforward and neutral, simply describing a medical condition. The slang meaning, however, is negative and dismissive. Some people object to the slang use because it grew out of the physical meaning, and they consider it disrespectful to people with disabilities.
