leopardess
A female leopard.
A leopardess is a female leopard. These powerful big cats live in Africa and Asia, hunting prey from antelope to monkeys across forests, mountains, and grasslands. Leopardesses are expert climbers who often drag their kills high into trees to keep them safe from lions and hyenas.
Like most big cats, leopardesses are smaller and lighter than male leopards, but they're still formidable hunters. A mother leopardess raises her cubs alone, teaching them to hunt and survive before they leave to establish their own territories. She's fiercely protective, moving her cubs frequently to keep them hidden from danger.
The word follows an old English pattern of adding -ess to create feminine forms of nouns, similar to lioness, tigress, or princess.
