lettering
Decorative letters that are carefully drawn to look nice.
Lettering is the art of drawing letters by hand to create words that are beautiful, expressive, or eye-catching. Unlike regular handwriting, where you write quickly without thinking much about how each letter looks, lettering treats each letter as a small work of art.
When you see fancy signs in store windows, decorated birthday cards, or stylish book covers, you're often looking at hand lettering. A letterer might spend several minutes perfecting a single word, carefully shaping each curve and line to create just the right feeling. Thick, bold letters might convey strength or importance, while thin, flowing letters might feel elegant or delicate.
Lettering is different from calligraphy, which follows strict traditional rules for how letters should be formed using special pens. Lettering gives you more freedom: you can sketch letters with pencils, paint them with brushes, or even form them with pieces of rope or flowers. Many letterers start by lightly drawing their letters in pencil, then going over them to add color, shadows, or decorative flourishes.
The word also refers to the letters themselves on something, like “the lettering on that sign is hard to read” or “the lettering on your jersey looks sharp.”
