library
A place with books and other materials you can borrow.
A library is a building or room filled with books and other materials that people can borrow or read. Most towns have a public library where anyone can get a free library card, check out books, and return them a few weeks later. Schools have libraries too, usually with books chosen specifically for students at that school.
Libraries have existed for thousands of years. The ancient Library of Alexandria in Egypt was famous for trying to collect all the world's knowledge in one place.
Modern libraries offer much more than just books. You can borrow movies, audiobooks, and music. Many libraries provide computers, internet access, and quiet study spaces. Librarians help people find information and discover new books to read.
The word can also describe a personal collection: someone might have a library of video games or a music library on their phone. A librarian is someone who works in a library, helping organize materials and assisting visitors. When something is described as library quiet, it means extremely silent, since libraries ask visitors to keep noise down so others can read and concentrate.
