lift
To raise something up to a higher place.
The word lift has several meanings:
- To raise something up or move it to a higher position. You might lift a heavy box onto a shelf, lift your hand to answer a question, or watch a construction crane lift steel beams hundreds of feet into the air. Athletes lift weights to build strength. When something gets lighter or easier to bear, we say a weight has been lifted. If your parents finally agree to let you get a pet after months of asking, you might feel like a huge weight has been lifted from your shoulders.
- A free ride in someone's vehicle. If you miss the school bus and your neighbor drives you to school, they've given you a lift.
- What British people call an elevator. When visiting London, you'd take the lift to the tenth floor, while in New York, you'd take the elevator to the same place.
- A feeling of happiness or encouragement. A kind word from a teacher can give you a lift when you're having a rough day. Good news can lift your spirits.
