like
To enjoy or feel pleased about someone or something.
The word like has several meanings:
- To enjoy or feel positively about something. When you like chocolate ice cream, it brings you pleasure. When you like a friend, you enjoy spending time with them. This feeling sits somewhere between mild appreciation and love: you might like a book without it becoming your absolute favorite.
- To want or prefer something. “Would you like some water?” really means “Do you want some water?” This usage appears constantly in polite requests and offers.
- Similar to or resembling something else. When you say your new puppy looks like a teddy bear, you're pointing out a resemblance. “What's it like to have a baby brother?” asks about the experience or feeling of something.
- As a filler word in speech. Someone might say “It was, like, really cold outside” when they mean simply “It was really cold outside.” While common in conversation, this usage can sometimes make a speaker sound less confident.
